Am I Asking Too Many Questions as a Construction Apprentice?

As an apprentice, I wanted to prove that I could be trusted with the work and learn as much as possible at the same time. Those two ambitions can fight each other. Ask too little and you can make a mistake because you were afraid to look stupid. Ask constantly and you can start handing the thinking back to somebody else. The goal is not fewer questions. The goal is better judgment about which questions you actually need to ask.

THE APPRENTICE TENSION

You want to prove yourself and learn at the same time.

When I was an apprentice, I was always trying to find that balance.

I wanted the people above me to see that I was trustworthy. If they gave me a task, I wanted them to believe I could handle it. I wanted more responsibility, and I understood pretty early that responsibility usually goes to the person who looks capable of carrying it.

At the same time, I was ambitious about learning. I wanted to know everything I could. That meant asking questions.

The fear of looking stupid can hurt both of those ambitions. You can be afraid to ask because you want to look competent. You can also be afraid to make a decision because you do not want to be wrong.

That is where the tension starts. An apprentice needs information, but an apprentice also needs opportunities to think.

The goal is not to teach an apprentice to stop asking questions. The goal is to teach them how to carry more of the thinking themselves.

THE QUESTIONS YOU CANNOT THINK TO ASK

Sometimes you honestly think you know what you are doing.

One of the hardest parts of being new is that you do not know what you do not know yet.

You can understand a concept. You can have a year of experience. You can have done the task before. Then you encounter one detail or condition you have never seen, and suddenly you find out there was another layer to the task.

I remember learning to install knockdown hollow metal frames. The first time somebody showed me, it looked complicated. Put this leg in first. Then the header. Bend the tab. Set the hinge side. Level it. Fasten it. Adjust the other leg. Check the reveal.

Eventually I started getting the hang of it.

One day I was given four or five frames to install. They asked if I knew how to do it. I said yes. And I did know how to install them. I worked through the openings for a couple of hours and the frames came out pretty good.

Then somebody asked me, “Did you look at the numbers?”

I had no idea what he meant.

The frames were numbered for specific openings because the hardware conditions were different. I had been thinking about handing and installation. I did not even know that matching each frame number to the correct opening was another thing I was supposed to be thinking about.

I take responsibility for the mistake. But looking back from the foreman's side now, I also see a leadership lesson.

The apprentice knew how to install a frame. He did not know enough yet to know that installing the correct frame was a separate part of the task.

If I have a relatively inexperienced apprentice today, I cannot protect the job by asking only, “Do you know how to do this?” and accepting yes as the end of the conversation.

I also have to think about the parts of the task that are easy for a newer person to miss. “Install these frames. And make sure you match the numbers because these are not all the same.”

Even if the apprentice rolls his eyes because he thinks I am telling him something obvious, I would rather do my part and set him up correctly.

NOT EVERY QUESTION MEANS THE SAME THING

Some questions are for information. Some are for affirmation.

After you work with apprentices for a while, you start noticing that questions come in different forms.

There is the real question. The apprentice genuinely does not know which screw to use, how the assembly goes together, what the print is showing, or what the next step is.

Then there is what I think of as an affirming question.

“This is the right screw, right?”

Sometimes the person already knows. His gut is telling him the answer. His experience is telling him the answer. He has used that screw on the same work all morning. But he wants the foreman to confirm it again.

I do not think the answer is to get irritated and tell the apprentice to stop asking. Especially with somebody new, that affirmation may be part of how confidence gets built.

A better response can be to turn the question around.

“You tell me. What do you think?”

Now I still get to supervise the decision. If he is wrong, I can stop it. But if he is right, I have made him use the knowledge instead of immediately handing the decision back to me.

I do this in the field. Somebody might ask which way a stud goes, or whether the cut side goes up or down, and I will ask, “If I wasn't here, what would you do?”

Sometimes they answer correctly immediately.

Exactly. That is the point.

Before you ask, be your own question detective for a minute.

I do think an apprentice should filter a question before immediately transferring it to somebody else.

That does not mean stand there for twenty minutes pretending to solve something you cannot solve. Taking your time and wasting time are two different things.

I mean take a moment and use the jobsite around you.

Did somebody already explain this?

Have I done this before?

What are the other guys using?

Is there another completed example I can look at?

If these are the screws sitting next to the drywall and everybody else is using them, does that tell me something?

What do I think the answer is?

And one of the most important questions: what happens if I am wrong?

If the answer involves safety, a difficult-to-reverse installation, expensive material, finished work, a condition that could damage another trade's work, or something else with a serious consequence, the threshold for asking should be low.

If you genuinely do not know, ask.

The point of the filter is not to make an apprentice quiet. It is to get him in the habit of using observation, memory, context, and deductive reasoning before somebody else does the thinking for him.

A GREAT QUESTION CAN STILL HAVE BAD TIMING

“Why?” questions and “I need this answer now” questions are different.

I am a curious person. I have always asked a lot of questions because I want to know why something works, not just how to do it.

That kind of curiosity is valuable. It is part of how you stop memorizing tasks and start understanding construction.

But not every curiosity question has to be answered the second it enters your head.

If the foreman tells you to put the cut side up, there may be a good reason you want to understand why. Maybe the cut sits better at the top. Maybe the factory edge is better at the floor. Maybe there is another condition involved.

But if everybody is moving and the answer is not required to safely and correctly perform the work, that may be a coffee-break question.

Write it down. Ask it when there is a slower moment.

There is a difference between a question that is stopping production because information is missing and a question that expands your knowledge because you are curious.

Both are good questions. They do not always belong at the same time.

THE TEN-SECOND QUESTION HAS A COST

The foreman may be solving a completely different class of problem.

From the apprentice's side, it is easy to think, “What's the big deal? It's one quick question.”

And sometimes it really is one quick question.

But I want apprentices to understand the weight of interrupting somebody who may be holding several other problems in his head.

You might be trying to figure out which screw to use. The foreman might be trying to figure out how to sequence the crew so eight people have productive work until a special-order delivery arrives two weeks from now.

Those are both problems of the unknown. They are just different-sized packages.

This is not about saying the foreman is too important to answer you. Training is part of leadership. It is about recognizing that concentration has value on a jobsite too.

If the foreman is setting you up in the morning and you already have three questions about the task, ask them together while you have his attention. Try to understand the scope of your day. If you finish this, what happens next? Should you report back, or is there another task already lined up?

Take ownership of your day without going rogue.

Construction requires quick thinking and preparation. Learning how to use somebody's attention well is part of that.

THE FOREMAN OWNS PART OF THIS TOO

If an apprentice keeps needing help, do not automatically blame the apprentice.

I do not like the idea that every repeated question is evidence of a bad apprentice.

If somebody asks me the same thing three or four times and genuinely does not understand it, I first have to look at how I am teaching.

Maybe I am answering too fast. Maybe I am saying, “Use this. Bye. Get out of here,” and expecting that to somehow become permanent knowledge.

Maybe the person needs to see it. Maybe he needs to do it with me once. Maybe there is a simple way to explain it that will actually stick.

A foreman also has to recognize what an inexperienced apprentice is likely to miss before the apprentice knows enough to ask about it. That was the lesson inside my door-frame mistake.

And when possible, you check the work. I know that is difficult. The foreman has his own job and usually does not have unlimited time to stand over somebody.

That is exactly why setting the person up correctly matters so much.

The apprentice has a responsibility to think. The foreman has a responsibility to create a situation where that thinking has a fair chance of succeeding.

A foreman can also train an apprentice to hide what he does not know.

I have seen it happen, and I have been on the apprentice side of it too.

You ask a legitimate question and get sarcasm. You get laughed at. You hear, “You should know that already.” Eventually you start calculating whether looking stupid is worse than guessing.

That is a bad calculation to force somebody into.

If the foreman is simply a poor communicator, sometimes you have to make an effort to have the conversation at an appropriate time. Be respectful. Keep the work the priority.

You can say something as simple as, “Listen, I'm trying my best here. I know I have questions, but I'm here to learn and I'm trying to get the work done right.”

You still have a job to do even if the person above you is not the best teacher.

Harassment is different. That should not be treated as a normal part of learning a trade, and it should be handled through the appropriate workplace or union chain of command.

But a difficult foreman is not a reason to pretend you understand something when the consequence of guessing actually matters.

THE QUESTIONS SHOULD CHANGE

As you get better, your questions become fewer, narrower, and more important.

I do not think an experienced carpenter becomes somebody who never asks questions.

The questions change.

They become less about basic installation and more about information that is genuinely missing. A detail conflicts with the plan. A condition is not shown. Two trades cannot both occupy the same space. A new system has to be understood. Somebody with the proper authority needs to make a decision.

The carpenter is doing more of the problem solving before the question leaves his mouth.

That is part of what makes thinking so valuable in construction. Doing the work takes skill. But the person who can understand the work, recognize the problem, narrow the uncertainty, and know when another answer is actually required becomes much more useful.

“I don't know” is not the embarrassing answer people think it is.

I am much more comfortable saying “I don't know” now than I was when I was younger.

As you build experience, you realize that not knowing one thing does not erase everything you have already proven you can do.

But I think that is true for an apprentice too.

Saying “I don't know” does not automatically mean you are incompetent. It can simply mean you have not encountered that condition yet or you do not have enough related experience to make the decision confidently.

Pretending to know is worse.

Owning “I don't know” is honest. Then the next part matters: what are you going to do about it?

IF YOU THINK YOU ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS

Honestly, the fact that you are worried about it may be a good sign.

If an apprentice came to me and said, “James, I feel like I'm asking too many questions,” I think my first answer now would be: good.

Not because I want him to feel bad about asking.

Because the question itself shows self-awareness.

You are noticing the jobsite around you. You are thinking about your own level of independence. You are considering somebody else's time. You are probably already starting to filter the questions you can answer yourself from the ones you genuinely need help with.

If you are doing that, your questions are already being reduced down to the ones that matter.

So keep asking those.

Think first when you can. Look around. Use what you already know. Consider the consequence of being wrong. Save the curiosity question for a better moment if the answer is not needed right now. And when you genuinely do not know, say it.

A good apprentice isn't someone who never asks questions. A good apprentice is someone who is comfortable saying, “I don't know,” and is determined to find an answer.

Sometimes that answer is standing in front of you wearing a foreman's vest.

Sometimes it is already somewhere in your own head and you just need to trust yourself enough to use it.

The goal is to need less help without becoming afraid to ask for it.
