How to Read a Spirit Level
A spirit level uses an air bubble inside a liquid-filled vial to indicate whether a surface is level. When the bubble is centered between the two reference lines, the surface is level.
The bubble moves toward the higher end of the level. Understanding this simple principle helps you determine which adjustment to make.
Which Way Should You Move the Level?
- Bubble moves left: The left end is higher. Lower the left end or raise the right end.
- Bubble moves right: The right end is higher. Raise the left end or lower the right end.
- Bubble is centered: The level is already level. No adjustment is necessary.
Both opposing adjustments are physically correct. This is why Bubble Level accepts two possible answers when the bubble is off-center.
Practice Until It's Second Nature
Reading a spirit level is an essential skill in carpentry, framing, installation, and general construction. Bubble Level turns this basic skill into a quick recognition exercise.
Each run gives you up to 60 seconds to identify the correct adjustments. Your first incorrect answer ends the run; either valid adjustment keeps you playing. Practice recognizing bubble positions until the answer becomes instinctive.
