Learning your place on a crew

About the book

You can arrive ready to work and still have a lot to figure out. When should you ask a question? How do you respond to correction? What should you prepare before the next task?

This book speaks to people entering construction and apprentices building those habits. In Never Stop Learning, James shows how asking for a method can teach more than asking for an answer. Accept Criticism and Do Your Homework address taking feedback and preparing to learn. Work Ethic, Reliability and Building Your Reputation connects daily conduct with the trust you earn.

Other lessons look beyond your own task: noticing the trades around you, anticipating what a foreman needs, and thinking through responsibility before it becomes yours.

Never Stop Learning

An excerpt from Welcome to Construction, Apprentice

The better the question, the better the answer. Be specific. Don’t just ask, “What studs should I use for this wall?” Ask, “How can I determine which studs are specified for this wall?” That small shift turns you from a follower into a thinker. It shows initiative, not dependence.

If you were to ask, “What studs should I use for this wall?” the answer would probably be something quick like, “2½-inch.” You’d get the answer, but you wouldn’t learn much.

Now, if you asked, “How can I determine which studs are specified for this wall?” the answer would be very different:

“Okay, look here. If you open the plan to the floor plan, you’ll notice each wall has a number and letter next to it. Those numbers and letters represent wall types. Now flip to the wall schedule on this page, you’ll see what each wall is made from. See? This one calls for 2½-inch studs.”
