How to Use This Calculator

Estimate sod pieces or rolls and whole pallets from lawn area and supplier packaging.

Inputs and where to find them

Measured area (sq ft). Measure the lawn surface that will receive sod, excluding beds, paths and other finished areas. The allowance is added after this area is entered. Irregular edges and curved beds can require additional cutting allowance.

Coverage per piece or roll (sq ft). Enter the square feet covered by one supplied sod piece or roll. Use your supplier’s actual dimensions or listed coverage; roll sizes vary. This is one piece’s area, not a pallet’s coverage.

Pieces or rolls per pallet. Enter the whole number of those same pieces or rolls supplied on one pallet. Confirm the count with the supplier. The result shows both individual pieces needed and the whole-pallet purchase alternative.

Allowance (%). Enter the percentage you want to add for cutting, handling loss or other conditions specific to this work. Apply it to the measured quantity rather than enlarging the measurements as well. The suggested value is editable, not a universal recommendation; enter zero when no allowance is needed.

Results, example and assumptions

Required area includes allowance, and pieces are the minimum whole-piece quantity on the entered coverage basis. Pallets round those pieces into complete pallets; purchased coverage reflects buying those pallets. Use the piece count if the supplier sells individually, rather than assuming you must also buy the pallet quantity.

Required area = measured lawn × allowance factor. Pieces = ceil(required area ÷ piece coverage). Pallets = ceil(pieces ÷ pieces per pallet). Purchased coverage = whole pallets × pieces per pallet × piece area.

Worked example: 1,000 sq ft plus 10% requires 1,100 sq ft. At 10 sq ft per roll, that is 110 rolls; with 50 rolls per pallet, buy 3 pallets covering 1,500 sq ft.

Use actual supplier sizes and pallet quantities; they vary. Piece count is the minimum if buying individually, while purchased coverage assumes whole pallets. Soil grading, establishment and watering are excluded.
