Drywall Mud & Tape Calculator

Estimate joint compound volume, buckets, measured joint-tape length, and whole tape rolls separately.

Your measurements

Dimensions accept decimals, fractions and explicit feet/inches. Unmarked values use the labeled unit. Other quantities use numbers only.

Enter the rate for your product and finishing scope; do not use a taping-only rate for full finishing.
Measure tape runs separately; include inside corners as applicable.
Editable example allowance; 0–100%. Enter 0 for none.

Your estimate

Enter your measurements to see the estimate.

Rate-based finishing estimate. Enter a rate covering the intended number of coats and fastener finishing. Skim coating, textures, repairs, corner bead and unusually wide joints are excluded unless your chosen rate explicitly includes them. Tape is based on measured seams, not inferred from area.

How to Use This Calculator

Estimate joint compound volume, buckets, measured joint-tape length, and whole tape rolls separately.

Decimals and fractions accepted for dimensions. Unmarked values use the labeled unit; explicit feet/inches are converted. For example, 10' 6 1/4" is an explicit length; 10.6 means 10.6 of the labeled unit. Rates, prices, counts and areas use numbers only.

Inputs and where to find them

Measured area (sq ft). Enter the drywall surface included in the finishing work. Use the same scope that your compound coverage rate represents, including the intended finish coats. Areas receiving special finishes or repairs may need separate allowances.

Compound rate (gal per 1,000 sq ft). Enter the gallons of compound required for 1,000 square feet of the stated finishing work. Obtain a suitable rate from product coverage information or comparable field experience. A rate for joint treatment alone may not include skim coating or the finish level you intend.

Usable compound per bucket (US gal). Enter the usable volume of compound in one bucket, in US gallons. A bucket labeled by pounds cannot be entered as the same number of gallons. Use product volume or a manufacturer-supported conversion for the selected compound.

Measured joints and taped corners (ft). Add the measured lengths of seams and inside corners that will receive tape. Sheet area does not reveal how many joints there are, so measure the planned joint layout separately. Include only corners that use the tape being estimated.

Tape length per roll (ft). Enter the tape length supplied on one roll. Use the package label for the selected tape. Different roll sizes or specialty corner products should not be combined as though they had identical lengths.

Allowance (%). Enter the percentage you want to add for cutting, handling loss or other conditions specific to this work. Apply it to the measured quantity rather than enlarging the measurements as well. The suggested value is editable, not a universal recommendation; enter zero when no allowance is needed.

Results, example and assumptions

Compound gallons include the allowance, and buckets round that volume to complete containers. Tape length comes from the measured seams and corners, with the same allowance applied; rolls round that separate length upward. Compound and tape are distinct quantities, so one is not inferred from the other.

Compound gallons = board area ÷ 1,000 × entered gallons per 1,000 sq ft × allowance factor. Tape = measured joint/corner length × allowance factor. Round gallons/bucket and tape/roll upward independently.

Worked example: For illustration, 1,000 sq ft at 10 gal/1,000 sq ft plus 10% needs 11 gal, or 3 buckets of 4.5 gal. 500 ft of seams plus 10% needs 550 ft, or 3 rolls of 250 ft. Confirm the chosen product and finish scope.

Rate-based finishing estimate. Enter a rate covering the intended number of coats and fastener finishing. Skim coating, textures, repairs, corner bead and unusually wide joints are excluded unless your chosen rate explicitly includes them. Tape is based on measured seams, not inferred from area.
