How to Use This Calculator

A quick area-to-sheet count for drywall. Enter the total area to cover.

Inputs and where to find them

Drywall area (sq ft). Add the wall and ceiling surfaces receiving drywall. Count each required face and layer separately: two layers on one wall need twice its surface area. Decide how to handle openings before entering the area; the calculator does not remove them automatically.

Sheet size. Choose the sheet size you plan to purchase. The result divides the required area by that sheet’s coverage, so changing sheet size changes the count. It does not arrange sheets around openings or decide whether a larger sheet can be carried into the room.

Waste allowance (%). Enter the percentage you want to add for cutting, handling loss or other conditions specific to this work. Apply it to the measured quantity rather than enlarging the measurements as well. The suggested value is editable, not a universal recommendation; enter zero when no allowance is needed.

Results, example and assumptions

Required coverage includes the allowance. The sheet count rounds that area up to complete sheets of the selected size, and purchased coverage is the area those sheets contain. Check the actual board layout before ordering: openings, sheet orientation, layers and offcut reuse can change the number needed.

Required coverage = drywall area × (1 + waste ÷ 100).
Sheets = round up(required coverage ÷ sheet area).
Purchased coverage = whole sheets × sheet area.

Worked example: 1,000 sq ft with 10% waste requires 1,100 sq ft. With 4 × 8 ft sheets, 1,100 ÷ 32 = 34.375, rounded up to 35 sheets, covering 1,120 sq ft.
