Total studs including extras
studs- Straight-run studs
- studs
- User-added studs
- studs
Includes a stud at each end of one straight run; the final interval can be shorter.
Basic straight-run count only. Openings, corners, partitions, backing, wall intersections, and structural requirements can need extra framing. No automatic opening deductions or structural design are included.
How to Use This Calculator
Count a straight run of studs, then add the extras your wall needs.
Decimals and fractions accepted for dimensions. Unmarked values use the labeled unit; explicit feet/inches are converted. For example, 10' 6 1/4" is an explicit length; 10.6 means 10.6 of the labeled unit. Rates, prices, counts and areas use numbers only.
Inputs and where to find them
Wall length (ft). Measure the straight wall run that needs regularly spaced studs. This basic count includes both ends of a positive-length run. It does not automatically deduct openings or add the framing needed around them.
Stud spacing O.C. (in). On-center spacing is measured from the center of one stud to the center of the next. Enter the maximum interval intended for the wall framing, using the plans or applicable assembly requirements. It is not the clear space between stud faces.
Additional studs. Add the whole number of studs needed beyond the straight-run count for corners, openings, intersections, backing or other details. Work these additions out from the framing plan. Enter zero, or leave it blank, when none are being added.
Results, example and assumptions
The straight-run count includes studs at both ends, with intervals no greater than the entered spacing. Additional studs are added to that count to produce the total. Use the result as a starting quantity, then review openings, intersections, backing and structural details against the framing plan.
Straight-run studs = round up(length (ft) × 12 ÷ spacing (in)) + 1 for a positive length.
Total studs = straight-run studs + manually added studs.
Worked example: A 20 ft wall at 16 inches O.C. has 240 ÷ 16 = 15 intervals. With both endpoints, that is 16 studs. Adding 4 studs for your conditions gives 20 studs.
