Inputs and where to find them
Area to insulate (sq ft). Measure the surfaces receiving this insulation. Exclude areas that are intentionally uninsulated and account for each separate required layer. This calculator estimates coverage; it does not determine the required thermal performance.
Purchasing unit. Choose the unit in which you buy the insulation, such as bags, rolls or packages. The coverage field must refer to one of the selected units. Changing the name alone does not change the product’s yield.
Coverage per unit (sq ft). Use the stated coverage of one selected package at the required thickness or installation condition. For products whose coverage depends on installed depth or density, check the manufacturer’s coverage information for that exact condition.
Waste allowance (%). Enter the percentage you want to add for cutting, handling loss or other conditions specific to this work. Apply it to the measured quantity rather than enlarging the measurements as well. The suggested value is editable, not a universal recommendation; enter zero when no allowance is needed.
Results, example and assumptions
Required area includes waste. The package count rounds coverage demand upward, and purchased coverage is what those whole packages provide at the entered coverage rate. These results do not select an R-value, verify an assembly or account for accessories omitted from the rate.
Required coverage = area × (1 + waste ÷ 100).
Packages = round up(required coverage ÷ coverage per package).
Worked example: For 600 sq ft, 5% waste gives 630 sq ft. A product with 40 sq ft per package requires 15.75, rounded up to 16 packages, covering 640 sq ft.
