Tile Calculator

Count tiles from measured surface area and your selected tile dimensions.

Your measurements

Dimensions accept decimals, fractions and explicit feet/inches. Unmarked values use the labeled unit. Other quantities use numbers only.

Editable nominal size; verify product coverage.
Editable allowance, 0–100%. Blank means 0%.
Optional whole number from the carton.

Your estimate

Enter your measurements to see the estimate.

Nominal tile coverage is an area estimate. Grout joints, layout, pattern, cuts, and product dimensions affect actual quantities. Grout, mortar, waterproofing, and underlayment are excluded.

How to Use This Calculator

Count tiles from measured surface area and your selected tile dimensions.

Decimals and fractions accepted for dimensions. Unmarked values use the labeled unit; explicit feet/inches are converted. For example, 10' 6 1/4" is an explicit length; 10.6 means 10.6 of the labeled unit. Rates, prices, counts and areas use numbers only.

Inputs and where to find them

Surface area (sq ft). Enter the total floor or wall surface receiving this tile. Measure each separate surface and add its area, deducting openings as appropriate. This is the installation area before the cutting allowance.

Tile length (in). Measure one face dimension of a single tile in inches. Use dimensions appropriate to your quantity estimate; the calculator does not add grout joints or convert a nominal tile size to its actual manufactured size.

Tile width (in). Measure the other face dimension of the same tile, perpendicular to its length. Use matching dimensions for one tile type. Mixed sizes, borders and decorative pieces should be estimated separately.

Waste allowance (%). Enter the percentage you want to add for cutting, handling loss or other conditions specific to this work. Apply it to the measured quantity rather than enlarging the measurements as well. The suggested value is editable, not a universal recommendation; enter zero when no allowance is needed.

Tiles per box. Enter the whole number of tiles in the carton you will buy. The package label or supplier listing should provide this count. Leave it blank if you only need a piece count; entering it adds a whole-box purchasing estimate.

Results, example and assumptions

Tile coverage is the face area of one entered tile. The required area includes waste, and the piece count rounds the demand upward. If a box count is supplied, the purchasing result rounds again to complete boxes and shows how many tiles those boxes contain. This is a quantity estimate, not a tile layout or grout takeoff.

Tile area (sq ft) = length (in) × width (in) ÷ 144.
Tiles = round up(surface area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ tile area).
Boxes = round up(whole tiles ÷ tiles per box).

Worked example: 120 sq ft with 12 × 24 in tiles gives 2 sq ft per tile. With 10% waste, 132 ÷ 2 = 66 tiles. At 8 tiles per box, purchase 9 boxes, containing 72 tiles.
