How to Use the Material Request Builder

A practical construction material request form

Prepare a contractor material request while walking the job, then copy it into an email or print it for a project manager. This reusable material request template keeps each line's quantity, packaging unit, and construction specifications together.

Creating a Material Request

Enter a Material Request Name, or leave it blank to use Untitled Material Request when saving or exporting. Choose Add Material and enter a positive quantity, a unit, and a material description. Specifications and item notes are optional. Untouched rows are excluded from saved requests and outputs; a partially completed row is highlighted so you can finish it without losing work. At least one complete material is needed.

Use the visible remove button to review the material before removing it. Cancel keeps the item unchanged; Remove Material removes only that line. Undo restores the record to before the removal. Duplicate and reorder controls remain available under the item's note and actions disclosure.

Recording Specifications

Record the size, gauge, length, thread, finish, and packaging details needed to identify the intended product. A 3-5/8" 20-ga stud, 10' long, must stay separate from a 3-5/8" 25-ga stud, 12' long. Fine-thread and coarse-thread screws are also distinct. Similar descriptions are never merged, substituted, or treated as engineering equivalents.

Quantities and Packaging Units

Use EA for individual pieces, BOX or BUNDLE for packaging, or LF and SF where appropriate. You can also enter BAG, ROLL, SHEET, CARTON, SET, or your own unit. Decimal quantities such as 2.500 remain exactly as entered. The tool does not convert boxes into pieces or change a unit behind the scenes.

A construction material list example

  • 120 EA metal studs — 3-5/8", 20-ga, 10' lengths.
  • 18 EA metal track — 3-5/8", 20-ga, 10' lengths.
  • 24 BOX drywall screws — 2", fine-thread; specify the required box size.
  • 2 BUNDLE hanger wire — 12-ga; include the required lengths.

Preparing Requests for Suppliers

Expand Request Details (Optional) to include the project, job location, supplier, requested-by name, delivery instructions, and general notes. For example, identify the loading dock and ask the driver to call on arrival. Confirm the specifications and packaging before sharing your supplier material request. This material requisition form is a communication document, not an approved purchase order.

Saving, Copying, and Printing

Guest requests recover on the same browser when local storage is available. To keep multiple private records across devices, sign in and choose Save to account. A confirmed save makes the request available on the existing Dashboard. Guest drafts are never automatically uploaded; use the explicit guest-copy action when you want one in your account.

Copy Request includes quantities, units, descriptions, specifications, and all notes in item order. Print / Save as PDF produces a supplier-ready document with optional delivery details. Disable browser headers and footers in the print dialog. Failed or unconfirmed saves keep the device draft; retry before assuming that the account copy is current.

What This Tool Does Not Do

The builder does not price materials, place orders, send email, substitute products, verify engineering suitability, or manage inventory. Entered specifications remain your source of truth. Use Field Measurement Pad to record dimensions separately and Field Counter to tally items before preparing a request.
