A pair is one opening with two equal door leaves. Example: one 6'-0" x 7'-0" pair is counted as 1 opening and 2 leaves at 3'-0" x 7'-0" each. For pairs, choose the active leaf hand when there is one, or record Both Active or No Active Leaf.

How to use the Door Field Takeoff Tool
Door Field Takeoff is built for walking a project and recording openings quickly. Each entry keeps the door or location, overall size, handing or pair condition, assembly type, and a custom note. BidSimp then produces opening totals, leaf totals, grouped quantities, an individual field log, copied text, and a printable PDF.

Single-leaf and pair size conventions
For a single-leaf door, a 3'-0" × 7'-0" entry means one 3'-0" leaf in one opening. For a pair, a 6'-0" × 7'-0" entry means one 6'-0" overall opening with two equal 3'-0" leaves. The grouped summary preserves the overall pair size and also identifies the equal leaf size.
Custom dimensions are supported and displayed to the nearest 1/16". Confirm whether the project uses nominal door sizes, frame opening sizes, rough openings, or field-measured clear dimensions before mixing information from different sources.
Handing and pair conditions
Single doors use LH, RH, LHR, or RHR. Pair entries can identify the active leaf as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR, or record Both Active or No Active Leaf. The tool records the condition you choose; it does not determine handing from a floor plan or verify the project's reference-side convention.
When door handing is uncertain, record a note and verify it against the approved door schedule, elevations, hardware sets, frame details, and manufacturer or supplier convention before ordering.
WORKED EXAMPLE
Three openings recorded during a job walk
- Door 101: 3'-0" × 7'-0", RH, single leaf.
- Door 102: 3'-0" × 7'-0", RH, single leaf.
- Lobby Pair: 6'-0" × 7'-0", RH Active, pair.
The totals show 3 openings, 4 leaves, and 1 pair assembly. The two matching single doors group together at quantity 2. The pair remains separate and is shown as two equal 3'-0" leaves.
How entries are grouped
The grouped summary combines entries only when assembly type, overall width, height, hand or pair condition, and normalized note match. Door numbers and locations remain in the field log so you can trace each opening even when several doors share the same material condition.
Use notes for distinctions that affect purchasing or review, such as frame type, material, rating, glazing, undercut, existing condition, active leaf, or an unresolved field question. Entries with different notes remain separate in the grouped quantity summary.
Common door takeoff mistakes
- Mixing door-leaf size, frame opening, rough opening, and field clear opening dimensions.
- Entering a pair width as though it were the width of each leaf.
- Calling handing from the wrong reference side or without checking reverse swing.
- Grouping doors that have different ratings, frame profiles, hardware, glazing, or material.
- Relying on the grouped quantity without preserving door numbers and locations.
Verify before ordering
- Door and frame schedules, elevations, details, hardware sets, specifications, and addenda.
- Nominal size, actual leaf size, frame type, jamb depth, anchors, throat, and wall condition.
- Handing, active and inactive leaves, astragals, coordinators, flush bolts, and egress requirements.
- Fire rating, labeling, glazing, louvers, finishes, undercuts, thresholds, and accessibility.
- Existing field conditions, demolition, reuse, lead times, delivery, and supplier conventions.
